Jan Treder

1924-2021

Jan Treder, aged 96, passed away peacefully at his home on the morning of 12th January 2021.

Born in Paczewo, Poland on Aug 5th 1924, he was the 2nd born of nine brothers.

He leaves behind his wife of 69 years, Roma, two brothers, two sons, a daughter and three grandsons. Jan entered and left the world in uncertain times; six years after Poland had recovered its independent status, two years after the Polish-Soviet war had ended and 15 years before the 2nd World War which determined the course of his future. He shared the belief, along with his compatriots, that there would be an opportunity to return to a free Poland soon after the end of the war. Unfortunately this dream did not occur in the time frame that he envisaged. Whilst he took British nationality, married and raised a family in the UK he remained a true patriot and embraced all opportunities to celebrate Polish traditions. In 1963 he made his first return (of many) to his homeland and met his youngest brother for the first time.

His passions and interests varied throughout his life. Following a number of years as a bench fitter, he finished his working life at the Post Office retiring at the age of 65.  He was a very keen and productive gardener, a skilled DIY enthusiast (things were always built to last), committed (and loud!) chorister in the Polish church choir and a strong family man.  He was known by many in the Reading Polish community and in his 80’s was still manning the door for New Year’s celebrations at the Reading Polish Club.

The Requiem Mass for Jan will be held at St Michael’s Catholic Church, Sonning Common on Monday 1st February.  This will be live streamed at 09:30 on 1st February from St Michael’s YouTube page and will be available to view for a few days afterwards.
